I would often look at art and think to myself "I can't afford that, but maybe I can do it myself sometime". being in my last year of study, I am about to be part of that creative world and I want to support fellow creatives in their various exploits, but buying the work, design and books that I enjoy.

So with the studio bookshelf reaching six [YES SIX...DON'T HATE], I have taken the next step, by backing Chris Piascik with his latest project. Known for his daily drawings, Chris has decided to collate four years worth of these in a self published book [1000 DAYS OF DRAWING AVAILABLE LATER THIS YEAR] and I can't wait to receive a copy in the post!

As part of the UCS Arts Intervention, I created a piece of work inspired by the new Langlands & Bell sculpture as part of a group exhibition. The exhibition launches this evening and runs until January 5th, so take a trip to the Waterfront Building, Ipswich to see my paper-cut up close [TO MAKE UP FOR MY POOR PHONE PHOTO] as well as the variety of work on display from paintings to stop-motion.

I'm having a red and white Christmas this year in the new house & I'm buying almost every reindeer decoration I've seen so far! My Christmas cards this year had to have one on too, and I will be selling these at the UCS Christmas fair this Saturday, along with my fellow students to raise money for our degree show. We're getting in the Christmas spirit with some new designs to be sold at the UCS Christmas Fayre this year. Last year was jam-packed full of festive gifts, and I can't wait to get behind the stall this time. I've got some hand-cut Christmas cards and personalised prints for sale. We have been busy fundraising for our degree show in June, and our next event is a bake sale.

After the success of the collaborative project earlier this year, we have been asked to create a new 'scene' for UCS to use for some promotional material. Well it has been a very eventful month, and I am still not done.

My preconceptions of moving house, are still valid. It has been very fun and exciting. However, it has not been as fun as I thought. I have alot of stuff. Packing, took 3 full days even though I had been packing the unessential stuff for 2 weeks already. Unpacking...is at a stand-still. The bags of art supplies that still don't have a home, are piled up along the spare wall in the studio, and the living room, being the only one that doesn't need decorating [ATLEAST NOT STRAIGHT AWAY], is sardined of still full boxes.

None of this I really mind. I am after-all, a third generation hoarder. What I do mind is the lack of internet. Still. After weeks of phone calls, being on hold, and letters, I still don't have my broadband. I'm limited to 10 minutes a day thanks to a mobile dongle, so I can just about check my emails ready for the start of term.

Expect lots of updates over the next week, with the Induction Week project and the start of my last year of my degree.

This is what I've been working on this morning, my coffee cups for the Surveys From a Small Island exhibition. I used some takeaway cups from the hostel in New York to create some templates for my designs.

I've always liked paper templates, ever since I found a packaging book in the college library that allowed me to make my own milk cartons. Even now, I have a bag [paper, of course] full of interesting packaging that I've found or been given. Christmas is a great time for us recycling horders! This is first one that I have gotten around to making a template from, and will be doing more soon...once I've finished my current project list...

I've always loved the idea of planting tall grass to have indoors, something that I STILL didn't get around to doing in the Flat. But how much nicer would it be to have a living grass runner on your dining room table!

I've been busying myself this week, with organising the group exhibition in response to our New York trip. The main blog is here, click to check out the other students' work in progress, there is lots to look forward to when we open on the 26th August at UCS.

I have my ideas secured, so I just need to finish the designs ready to print and hang. This is the first 'real' exhibition I have been in, and the first I have helped organise. All good practice for the degree show next year, perhaps it will be less daunting for me...perhaps!

This is another illustration inspired by my recent trip to New York, more specifically, Coney Island. I think I was the only person who didn't know that there was a beach in New York. Yup, a beach with sand and everything! The main source of insipration fro this repeat pattern is the ferris wheel and rollercoaster, which decided to break just as we were in the queue.

I like the unusual shape that's happening here following the curve of the tracks, and I think that a vector or block colour style would suit it well. I wonder how these designs would sit in a predominantly photographic exhibition?

Another doodle for the New York exhibition. I have been playing around with Illustrator and this post [aswell as a growing interest with collections], lead me to thinking about ways of portraying my new York. What about taking lots of different things from my trip and arranging them in a big apple. Too obvious? What do you think, would primary shapes be more interesting?

I got lots of inspiration while in New York. Is that too obvious a statement? I mean, come on. New York. The group are very lucky to have had an interview with the Evening Star regarding the trip, especially in regards to the pop-up exhibition held on the Highline. I'm not sure when it will be printed, but I'll keep you posted.

We will also be having a follow up exhibition at UCS sometime in August, which will be my first exhibition as not part of a class. I'm curious to see how the 2 graphic designers' work will fit with a predominantly photographic show, but also excited for such a chance to stand out. The doodles above show my current ideas; illustrations, patterns and an alphabet. Check thenetwerk to see some of the groups' thoughts and photos.

I'm off to New designers this morning in London. It's something I have always heard about, but never had the chance to go. Last Summer before final year, I think is a great reason to visit. Part 2 is going to be full of graphic design, illustration, product design, with a special talk on the new portfolios and the Secret Wars live draw in the evening [which I am really hoping we can get into].

Who knows, maybe UCS will go next year?

After 21 hours of sleep, I think I have recovered from the New York jet-lag. Just in time for work. I managed to complete the alphabet project I had planned to do whilst there, and got lots more inspiration than I thought possible! Hopefully this trip will be continued next year. UCS is hosting CO2art, an exciting exhibition by 11-16 year old students in Suffolk in response to environmental issues. The groups were asked to create "large collaborative pieces of visual art that communicates their concerns on climate change to others of their own age and the wider community".

The exhibition opens June 29th and is available for public view at the UCS Waterfront Foyer until July 12th.

I can't handle the Six-Week-Holidays. Never have been able to. I seem to get all teh fun out of the way in the first few weeks and then boredom slowly eats away at my soul until Spetember comes along again. University holidays are worse. By the time I've had my 6 weeks off, the Six-Week-Holiday is just beginning. Argh! So I decided to see if anyone else was up for a little type project.

7 classmates will be playing around with our randomly selected letter/s (thankyou random.org) to eventually complete an alphabet by the time our last year starts in September.

Can't wait to see how this turns out!

I saw this while Spring cleaning my hardive for the Summer. This is an illustration by Teagan White done in Adobe Illustrator, which is a program I am still not comfortable using. I think it's because of the clean-cut vector designs I admire, and think that I can't create something if it's not perfect. I'd still rather draw in Photoshop! I think I will use this free time to try and get rid of my fear of Illustrator.

All I need is a subject matter.
Any ideas?

This is the current designs for my museum branding: The Museum of Useful Things also known as Muse. I managed to hand-in more than I thought I would, due to timing, so I was pleased with this one. I just had my feedback tutorial and it seems I am definitely on the right track, I need more of it. More mockups, more annotations, more.

Shown is the poster, envelope with letterhead, compliments slip and business card. In the background are just some printouts of the pattern I have created. I have a few things to tweak on these, and a few more bits to include...hopefully I can get this done ready for print during Easter holidays so I can forget about it! Any ideas or comments welcome.

I went to the Contemporary Graphics Fair on Tuesday and had a great time. I missed the first Pick Me Up last year and knew that I HAD to go. For anyone who studies or enjoys the graphic arts, this is a definate for the diary.

This is my sort of exhibition. I like things that are colourful, or shiney, attention grabbing. I get bored in the Tate. It takes me about an hour to do the whole place. It's like my brain has design ADHD. We were here for like 3 hours, and it's not big at all really, but jam-packed full of posters and prints and mini-studios and a drumkit. Yes in Anthony Burrill's studio was a drumkit. [THEY HAVE AFTER HOUR LIVE DRAWING-DJ EVENINGS ON SOME DAYS]

[PRINT CLUB LONDON HAD A STUDIO AND I WANT ONE TOO, ANYONE WANT TO GO HALVES?]

I took too many photos. I felt bad that I was snapping everything but not buying the work. Birthday wishlist perhaps? I did get a newspaper from Burrill which had paper versions of some of his work. All good. So, here are a few of my favourite parts of the show.

Okay, hands up! I have missed uploading some of my daily designs. Quite a few actually. Who thought that finding the time to do something creative for yourself would be so difficult. Design students out there, you all understand, right?

This is todays design on the theme monochromatic. I chose Pantone's colour of 2011, Honeysuckle. This concept has been rolling around my sketchbooks for months, and I'm glad I finally got it out of my system. I'd like to make a couple of prints of these to send to some new little girls' bedrooms.

Here it is, all finished!
A {LONG OVERDUE} gift for my Dad. He doesn't get to see much of my art, so I thought he should have one to put on his wall!

This is an original design, sketched out during class, scanned and editted in Illustrator, then finally hand-cut with my trusty scalpel.

This is definately and idea I will continue developing. I really want to try a white on white version...maybe for a wedding? This has also given me an idea for my current Negotiated Project which is looking at books.

A little while ago we had some posters up in the studio done by the 3rd years. Things I wish I knew was a project to give advice to the 1st year design students.

I stumbled on this while looking up designs to add to my Advanced Design Practice module. It's something that should be documented and sat in wonder at.

This alphabet designed by Stuart Whitton is a great way of using found objects to make your own type. Granted you see this alot. What makes this stand out is that it is infact pencil drawings of said found objects. Painstaking genious.

Some letters are left deliberately unfinished to better show the form of the letter. See each individual letters here.

Day 28 is UNIQUE

This is a pattern made from my fingerprint made using a differnet way of creating seamless patterns. It is easier to place your imagery, but harder to know how it will look once tiled. I lvoe the idea, colour and style of this...but I think I would prefer the pattern to be more abstract. You can see the repeat too easily.

Look at me keeping up with the pace! I must admit, I'm thinking about the next day's drawing and it's distracting me from researching homework.

This is another Pokemon, who looks the same as the Plusle but different colours and symbol. As in plus and minus. Clever. So what did i do? A co-ordinating pattern! I don't know why, but the pattern looks Christmassy to me...I will have to try this one out in blue/white/silver and red/white/green.

I had to Google what a Plusle was...it's a Pokemon. Yes, this IS a challenge after all!

I was stumped on what to do until I got the idea of using the symbol and colour scheme that represents said creature to create a pattern. I love ogees (the pinchy-oval shape), and after making a base shape in Illustrator (there must be an easier way - tutorials here I come), I basically filled in the gaps.

Project 365, Day 23 is KIWI

I got frustrated with ugly grapes and stopped with the patterns for today.

I have always loved doodling kiwis. I have no idea why, but it pleases me to do so. This was a break from the concentration of pattern making in Illustrator, of which I still do not have the hang of, and served as a test to see if I could draw in Illustrator as I am used to doing in Photoshop. I really DO need to get comfortable with this program. I know all of the benefits, but I supposed in a way I have higher expectations of what I want to do, than I can actually do right now.

Daily practise is sure to help me!

Not loving this one. But I got something done for the day. I like the idea - using just a geometric shape to try to represent the subject, I just think I rushed and put down any colours/layout I could on my laptop before I went to bed. Heh. I do have a couple of further ideas now that I can develop later to make it look more like packaging for wine rather than an ugly wallpaper border.

I did this as a complimentary pattern to the LEMON design. Well, citrus is citrus yes? Excuse the quality, for some reason my Illustrator hasd ecided not to let me save jpg files. I think it's missing the sun.

The print has turned out smaller than it looked on screen...something to do with working at A4 then reproducing onto a bigger canvas perhaps? Something to look into.

As I'm sure you all know by now, I love pattern. Give me a shopping spree in Paperchase ANY day. I have wanted to set myself a drawing every day challenge for a while now, and yet it's one of those things I keep pushing back. I'm bad at setting myself projects you see. Thankfully there are a few ways to get over this, and mine is having someone else pick the daily theme for me.

I'm a few days late, but I will be able to catch up on days 1-18. Later today will be my first design: Day 19.

I'm using my own sketch/notebook more, though I must admit, the moleskins I bought in London are still unopened, still in the plastic wrap. These are just in a cheapo notebook from Wilcos. I like this notebook. It has cream coloured pages, which unlike stark white, makes me WANT to doodle over it. [I MAY HAVE TO GET SOME MORE BEFORE THE SPRING RANGE TAKES OVER...]

One of my resolutions is to do and share more of my doodles, thus making me act upon some of the ideas I get.

I consider this coming week as my first week of the year. Last week was the official start of term, but we were still dealing with hand-in for the lasts emseter, so I didn't really count that week. Now it's all new and shiney...and the sun is out. Great start to the year!

We have three new classes, Advanced Design Practice, which is currently dealing with contemporary design. This means all my blog stalking will come in handy. Graphic Identity which I am anxious about as I am not a logo designer in any sense of the word, and Negotiated Project which I am very excited about.

I am exploring the concept of The Book, and I must admit I thought perhaps it was too big an idea for me to get my head around, but while explaining to Mum on the phone about it, I got all excited and went straight for the computer to research. Can't be a better sign for being on the right track really?

I'm special.

2011 is the year of the Rabbit [IT'S NOT CHINESE NEW YEAR YET BUT ANYWAY...] which is my year!

I should be really lucky this year, and I must say I have LOTS of things planned for the coming months. Including [IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER] moving home, a new job, beginning the last year of my degree, a new blog revamp and the set up of a little online design shop.

I'm really excited to start...though I don't count this year as starting until I'm back at uni on the 4th.

So to all you fellow Rabbits out there HAVE A GREAT YEAR, and to everyone else, I'm sure yours will be fab too :)

So I have finally organised myself in regards to the work I need to complete for January 4th.

I didn't think I really needed to do this sort of thing, but it turns out, it helps me ALOT. My brain is now somewhat free of whirling thoughts about random projects that would give me depressing headaches.

Writing things down is a great destresser!

This is my AWESOME-IN-YOUR-FACE-YELLOW-POST-IT-PROJECT-TO-DO-LIST wall. Stategically placed above my comp so that I can see it. When I get the urge to surf or blog or game, I cross something off first. I don't have as much to do in certain projects as I thought I did, so I'm panicking less and less about it all.I just need to make sure I have a stash of ink cartridges before everything shuts for Crimbo.

It all started with a teacosy, and ended up a page of British Tea Time.

I have teapots on the brain with our current SOMETHING FROM NOTHING project. It's going quite well I think, so far...I'm managing to keep an open mind and not plan ahead to the final product. I am actually really enjoying the concept behind it. It's all about an idea being completely separated from the subject, sort of. Take a random object [mine being a teapot-shaped tea infuser] and play around with it to see what happens.

I had a trick when I was little and didn't know what to draw. A friend of mine wrote down words on bits of paper and I would choose one out of an envelope when I was feeling creative. This project is a little like that. Maybe that's why I like it.

Can anyone think of a film/scene/song/story/artwork that features a teapot?
'I'm a Little Teapot' has been mentioned already, sorry.

I'm intrigued.

I really do like this sort of thing. I think I am gaining more appreciation for typography since I started the course...it was definitely something I was not interested in.

Now, I would happily have some type on my walls...probably in a font that 'real' Graphic Designers would hate me for. Graphic Designers with typography are kind of like wine connoisseurs; they know the difference between a full-bodied red and a crisp white.
I just drink whatever I think tastes good!

I have decided to choose Handmade Typography as the working title of my essay for Critical & Creative Approaches to Design this semester, and I am in the process of developing my own personal project involving words and type.

I stumbled on the work of Will Cotton via this pretty blog and am loving the subtle mix of photography and desserts. {WHICH, MAY I ADD ARE REAL}

He has been made more recognisable by Katy Perry's recent album, Teenage Dream...and for those of you who loved the styling of her video, he was the director too.

I always appreciate painters who can capture the human form, it's almost a lost art of classic portraiture, and even though I would never sit for hours and have a huge portrait done, it is still amazing damnit! And something I can't do for toffee.

This is my favourite build on Grand Designs. Im watching the tail end of it now for perhaps, the fourth time. I know alot of people will not like the fact that it is pre-made in sections, many won't like that it's German. But you know what. I love all that.
Why not have something that's part-built away from your nice plot of land. I suppose it's like flat-pack. And I love flat-pack too!

Glass. Big glass panels. Open plan spaces. Split roofing. German engineering. Surely no-one can deny them of that one!?

I would have this house in an instant [in white of course]...my problem would be choosing from all the designs in the Huf Haus Show Village!

Well, Hello Naomi, who has been one of my Flickr stalks for {I FORGET} how long, has been doing this sort of thing for one of her recent clients, Imprintables. It really makes me want to make something just so that I can try a beautiful dressed shot of my work. This as a style is definately something I can see in my future portfolio.
